Good Luck Charm (おまじない) Part 1/3

"Check out this charm! If you always keep it with you, you and the person you like will be sure to fall in love with each other. I searched all over the place to get these for you and Shinya-sempai."
Kawazoe's classmate Chihiro showed her the charm.
Chihiro loves charms. She must have gone all the way to the fortune telling shops in Shinjuku to get these.
"Yeah, yeah. I get it. Thanks."
She sarcastically thanked Chihiro and gave her the money for the charm.
It had a round plastic cover at the end of a black cord. The paper on the inside had a magic circle pattern with characters she had never seen before.
(I really hope Shinya-sempai and I will fall in love with each other...)
Kawazoe hoped for this and then attached the charm to her cell phone.
Not much time passed after that when Shinya called out to Kawazoe and caught up to her.
"Hey, would you maybe want to go out some time...?"
Suddenly, without being able to respond, Kawazoe turned around and ran away.
(Running away from Shinya-sempai... That was really bad... Tomorrow I'll give him a proper response).
Kawazoe thought about that while she was walking home, and when she got there her mother was in a panic.
"Mom, what's wrong?"
"Oh, I'm glad you're home! Your brother was hit by a car!"
He was walking home from university that evening and, right by the house, he was hit by a car who ignored the traffic signal.
She and her mother rushed to the hospital where her brother was lying in a bed. He suffered from severe wounds that would take 7 months to fully heal.
Pop!
A popping sound came from somewhere in the hospital room.
The next day, Kawazoe stayed home from school to take care of her brother.
