Great Curse [Modern Hyakumonogatari: Kowai Hanashi 11/99]

Great Curse (大凶)

By Nishiurawa in "Modern Hyakumonogatari: Kowai Hanashi"
Shitayama works in a funeral home and every month she goes to a nearby shrine to do an omikuji reading.
The result she gets from the omikuji usually has the opposite meaning when it comes to work.
During the months when she got "Great Blessing", there weren't many funeral services. But as they went from "Middle Blessing" to "Small Blessing" to "Blessing" to "Curse" and continuing that way, her job would get busier.
"During that time I was heartless, so every month I hoped to get 'Curse'..."

Last year on New Years, she visited the shrine alone and did an omikuji reading.
Written on the paper she had taken was "Great Curse".
Recently she had kept getting "Great Blessing" and she didn't have much work at all, so she thought
(I'm going to have so much business this year!)
She jumped for joy and went home feeling proud.

The next evening, Shitayama was at home and got a phone call from the police.
Her daughter and husband were returning home and got into an accident. The car was destroyed. She and her husband and both of their children were killed. From that evening, Shitayama was quite busy preparing for their funeral.
"It took a personal misfortune to finally understand that my business is based on other peoples' misfortunes."

   Shitayama still does omikuji readings.
But no matter how many times she does it, she never gets "Great Blessing".
