The White Crow [Modern Hyakumonogatari: Kowai Hanashi 10/99]

The White Crow (白いカラス)

By Nishiurawa in "Modern Hyakumonogatari: Kowai Hanashi"

When Haruhi was in year 3 of elementary school, there was a crow in a shrine near his house.
   It was a white crow.
From its beak to its feet it was a translucent white and it was around two times larger than a normal crow.
It would sit on top of a large stone torii and look down over the city.

One day, he wanted to show the crow to some of his friends so he brought them to the shrine. But his friends couldn't see the crow that was sitting on top of the torii.
(I see... It must be a bird spirit only visible to me...)
That's what he thought at that time.

Soon enough it was summer vacation.
Haruhi got the fishing rod he had been asking for from his father.
Right away he wanted to try it out.
He quickly finished his lunch and got on his bike to head to a nearby riverbank.
On his way, he was riding along the river when suddenly something grazed the top of his head.
That white crow was slowly flying in circles.
This was the first time he had seen the crow outside the shrine, or even flying for that matter.
Before long, the crow took a steep dive and flew right in front of his eyes.
For some reason, whenever he put his foot onto the pedal to start leaving, the crow would continue to dive over and over making it impossible for him to move.

At that point, he suddenly felt the ground leap up and start violently shaking.
All the trees around him were making a chattering sound and the power lines were buzzing and shaking.
As Haruhi sat on his bike the area around him collapsed in on itself.
After about a minute the shaking died down but a deep sound continued to echo around him.
Haruhi quickly looked above his head and the crow wasn't there anymore.

When he arrived at the riverbank, it was a horrible scene. A huge fissure ran along the breakwater, and the tetrapod he always sat on to fish from was destroyed.
At that point he thought about what would have happened if the crow hadn't stopped him, and Haruhi shivered.

The next day Haruhi visited the shrine in order to give thanks to the crow, but he found the torii broken at its legs and lying on the ground in pieces.
It was repaired some time afterwards, but he never saw the crow ever again.
